Design Lessons From The Street

Skooled is lay-flat graphic arts photo book that celebrates Brian Chard’s monochromatic film inspired street photography with Sarah Spriggs’ energetic hand lettered typography. The two created the book Skooled while Sarah held an intership position as part of her graphic design program as St. Lawrence College with Brian Chard Design. The book is intended to explore the design process while being visually inspiring. The book makes a great art & design coffee table book and inspiring design studio resource.
The Story
Photographer Brian Chard teamed up with talented hand-lettering artist and typographer Sarah Spriggs to create an inspiring book that combined their love of street photography and hand lettered typography. This hard cover book is full of visual inspiration and custom graphic design that is a joy to browse. The book was created with Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. The photos were edit in Lightroom with a custom preset built to create the film inspired look. All of the hand lettering was converted to vector paths as an exercise in typography and design. Once finalized in Adobe InDesign, the final book design was exported to Blurb using their Adobe plug-in feature to ensure accurate printing while using advanced design tools and software.
